Monday July 23rd 2012
Main Topic: Introduction to plastination and S10 technique

STATION A:  S-10 Technique: Polymerization
Venue: Plastination laboratory, the ground floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: A/Prof. Carlos Baptista
Main Tasks:

  1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment and hardener for S10 polymerization.
  2. Tutorial 2 - Conditions to cure a specimen.
  3. Hands on 1 - how to finalize the impregnated specimen.
  4. Hands on 2 - how to control the S6 cross-linker time exposition.
  5. Hands on 3 - how to finish a cured specimen.
  6. Tutorial 3 - Problems associated with curing.
  7. Hands on 4 - how to do a slow curing procedure

STATION B:  S-10 Technique: Polymer Impregnation
Venue: Room 204, the 2nd floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: Prof. Constantin Sora
Main Tasks:

  1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment and solutions for S10 impregnation.
  2. Hands on 1 - how to set up an impregnation unit.
  3. Hands on 2 - how to prepare a dehydrated specimen for impregnation.
  4. Demonstration - how to manage the impregnation procedure.
  5. Hands on 3 - how to finish the impregnation.

STATION C:  S-10 Technique: Fixation and dehydration.
Venue: Room 206, the 2nd floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: Prof. Rafael Latorre
Main Tasks:

    1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment and solutions for dehydration.
    2. Hands on 1 - how to prepare a specimen for dehydration.
    3. Hands on 2 - how to fix a hollow organ to be plastinated.
    4. Hands on 3 - how to control dehydration procedure.
    5. Tutorial 2 - Defatting during dehydration and acetone recycling.

Tuesday 24th July
Main topic: Epoxy sheet plastination technique

Note: During the lunchtime, those participants who will attend the ICP2012 need to check out. Please leave your luggage at the concierge of the hotel. After the afternoon workshop, a bus will be arranged to take you from Beijing Commercial Business Hotel to the ICP2012 conference site - Beijing International Convention Center.

STATION A: Epoxy Technique: Slicing
Venue: Plastination laboratory, the ground floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: Prof. Constantin Sora
Main Tasks:

    1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment for slicing.
    2. Hands on 1 – how to section a frozen specimen.
    3. Hands on 2 – how to set up sections for dehydration.
    4. Demonstration – Ultrathin epoxy sheet technique.

STATION B:  Epoxy Technique: Dehydration and Polymer Impregnation
Venue: Room 204, the 2nd floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: A/Prof. Carlos Baptista
Main Tasks:

  1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment and solutions for epoxy impregnation (5min).
  2. Hands on 1 – how to manage the dehydration procedure (20min)
  3. Tutorial 2 – How to manage the defatting procedure (10min)
  4. Hands on 2 - how to set up an impregnation unit (20min)
  5. Hands on 3 – how to control the impregnation procedure (20min).
  6. Hands on 4 – how to finish the impregnation (10min).

STATION C:  Epoxy Technique: Polymerization and casting
Venue: Room 206, the 2nd floor, Morphology Building
Lecturer-in-charge: Prof. Rafael Latorre
Main Tasks:

  1. Tutorial 1 - Basic equipment and solutions for polymerization and casting (10min).
  2. Hands on 1 – how to cast an impregnated slice (60+min).
  3. Hands on 2 – how to finish a cured specimen (30min).
  4. Demonstration – how to collect data from a plastinated slice (10min).
